Who is Bassam

Bassam Fares is a dedicated community leader, educator, and builder with a proven record of service and advocacy in West Edmonton, where he has lived for over 13 years. With hands-on leadership experience across faith, education, youth, and civic sectors, Bassam is prepared to bring real, practical solutions to City Hall.

 

From 2010 to 2023, Bassam served as the founding manager of Rahma Mosque, where he led the development of one of West Edmonton’s most active and trusted community hubs. His leadership focused on strengthening civic engagement, expanding public services, and fostering inter-community cooperation. His ability to build strong teams, manage complex projects, and deliver with accountability makes him uniquely equipped for public office.

 

Passionate about education and youth empowerment, Bassam co-founded MAC Islamic School Edmonton and MAC Creative Minds Preschool—championing safe, inclusive, and high-quality learning environments. He also taught at Edmonton Islamic Academy, giving him a grounded understanding of the issues affecting students, families, and schools.

 

A lifelong advocate for youth, Bassam founded both Rashid Youth Club (RYC) and MAC Youth Edmonton, helping hundreds of young people build leadership skills, find belonging, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. His approach to youth work is deeply grassroots, focused on mentorship, confidence-building, and creating safe civic spaces for all.

 

Bassam has served on the Alberta Anti-Racism Advisory Council, as Vice-President of IslamicFamily, and as a board member on the Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities (ECMC), working collaboratively to address systemic issues, improve equity, and build inclusive policies.

 

Bassam is a strong communicator, consensus-builder, and systems thinker. He understands how to work within institutions while staying true to grassroots concerns. With his extensive experience managing budgets, navigating policy, and building partnerships, he is ready to deliver real, tangible progress for Sipiwiyiniwak. He’s not just promising change—he’s delivered it for over a decade. Now, he’s ready to serve on City Council and continue building a West Edmonton that works for all.
